Star Trek: Question

It sounds like a lot of you are loving the idea of the upcoming Star Trek event and you’ve shown great knowledge of the shows…HOWEVER…as usual, I have a question that will get this community talking…

Who was better? Captain Kirk or Captain Picard?

Let the discussion begin!!

  3. As a true trekkie i find they all (including Janeway) have there own ways in which they better from their counterparts.
Although the best part about the Voyager series as they continue in book form where we see Voyager return to the Delta Quadrant. . So awesome..

  4. Being older than many here I grew up with James Kirk in prime time. Having seem them all, honestly it’s a very close call between Kirk and Picard. Both very different. Sorry Janeway fans she’s only a fraction above Deep Stain Nine!

  5. Rypod, you have doomed us all. You have opened the Pandora’s box of Trekkie conversations and it will sap us of all our strength until we are nothing but Tribbles shaking on the ground…

That said, while they both have their strengths and are well suited to their respective roles and time periods, Picard is clearly the superior captain. The reasons for this are thus:

    1. A Vulcan (Spock) once mind melded with Kirk to help with Kirk’s self-control. Picard once melded with a Vulcan (Sarek) to help with the Vulcan’s self control.
    2. To get a Klingon bird-of-prey Kirk has to fight a Klingon to the death on a dying planet where his son and ship both met their ends. Picard just has to ask for one.
3.Speaking of Klingons, they just want to kill Kirk, they let Picard choose their leader.
    4. Signing on as a crewman on Kirk’s ship is a death sentence, sign on with Picard and you can have a long distinguished career that lasts longer than the first commercial break.
    5. Kirk can recognize the the first lines of the US Constitution. Picard can recall and quote Shakespeare… and Moby Dick… and The Epic of Gilgamesh… and pretty much any classic novel.
    6. Kirk fought over women. Picard had women fight over him.
    7. Picard never ordered his ship to self-destruct as a bluff; when he orders it to do so, he MEANS it.
    8. Picard infiltrated Romulus, posed as an intergalactic mercenary, and was tortured extensively after capture by the Cardassians — and never broke a sweat. Which brings us to:
    9. THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS
    10. Picard doesn’t rely on the Organians to help him settle intergalactic squabbles.
    11. Picard wasn’t afraid to take on Satan.
    12. Picard’s doctor can actually save people’s lives instead of just reporting their deaths.
    13. Picard admits he’s made mistakes. It takes a real man to admit their errors.
    14. Picard was stabbed in the heart. Laughed.
    15. Picard is a tactical genius. So much so that a method he developed is now mandatory reading at Starfleet Academy, The Picard Maneuver.
    16. When questioned about the Picard Maneuver, Picard shrugs it off as something anyone would have come up with. Picard is humble.
    17. Kirk jumped into bed with any woman who would have him and it often bit him in the backside. He also fell instantly under the spell of Elaan (woman with love potion tears). Picard only slept with intelligent women that he got to know and could hold an interesting conversation with. He met the perfect woman who could read his mind and change herself to be everything he could ever want in a companion. Picard worked closely with her and while he did acknowledge his attraction, he never succumbed to his base desires and the seduction.
    18. Kirk meets sentient androids and breaks them through his inane conversation. Picard holds intelligent conversations with his android crew member and fights for (and wins) rights for them.
    19. Kirk meets omnipotent energy beings (Trelane) and has to have the beings “mom” come rescue him. Picard tells the omnipotent being (Q) to get off his bridge and Q does.
    20. I have met Patrick Stewart and he is a funny, intelligent man who actually enjoys talking with people and meeting them.
    21. I have also met William Shatner, and he holds himself in a rather pompous way, thinking himself better than the lowly peons who scuttle around him.

    Need I go on?

    1. Wow, that was a massive comment lol, and I knew by asking this question it would essentially destroy mankind as it’s the one question Trekkies have been arguing about for years 😛

    2. This! ^^^ *GenFireDragon drops the mic and walks away*

      One more for that list:

Picard is kidnapped and dropped on a planet with the knife wielding kidnapper and, instead of trying to kill him, learns how to communicate and defeats an invisible energy monster. “Picard and Dathonn at El-Adrel”

I always saw Picard as the academic and Kirk as the jock. I’ve always related more to academics than jocks.

All that being said, one of the best single moments of any series was when Sisko gut-checked Q. “You hit me! Picard never hit me!”

  6. I grew up with Kirk and Picard. I like TNG for Riker, Picard, Data, Jordie, Wesley Crusher. Kirk had Spock. So I can’t decide between the two.

  7. It is hard for me to separate the actor from the character, so I gotta go with Picard (love Sir Patrick). Shatner (no comment) and Pine (eye candy) can learn a thing or two from this gentleman.
